| After last years annual autumn meeting of the german Mammillaria Society (AfM), before the lockdown. I had the chance to visit the collection of our society at the botanical garden of the Martin-Luther-University in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt. After some years with not enough care the botanical garden has hired a new gardener now, who is only caring for the Mammillarias and the other cacti and is doing a pretty good job. He has already repotted half of the plants. And has sown a couple of new ones. Here are some impressions.. Some variations of Mam. bombycina Mature Lenta's A fairly large Mam. polythele Some members of the Polyacanthae Series Supertextae (Elegantes) Some plants of the true Mam. haageana Mam. dixanthocentron, Mam. vaupelii, Mam. flavicentra and Mam. ignota Mam. huitzilopochtlii, Mam. crucigera var. grandinosa and Mam. crucigera (note the grandinosa with long centrals in the back) Mam. huitzilopochtlii var. imperialis (one of my favourites)

| Series Leucocephalae Mam. mendeliana (l.) and Mam. bravoae (r.) Very nice forms of Mam. muehlenpfordtii A mature specimen of Mam. hahniana (in my opinion are these plants still closer to Mam. klissingiana, than Mam. saetigera) Large specimen of the Series Mammillaria (Macrothelae) not repotted yet. Members of the series Scrippsianae Mam. floresii (=temorisensis), Témoris, Chih. Views of the collection, enjoy!

| That's quite amazing. Do the AfM pay the University for space and upkeep? I can't imagine any UK Botanical Garden or organistion (RHS, Kew etc) doing this for free. _________________ Chris43, moderator

| Hi Chris,
as far as I know there is no money involved. I just know that one of our members is or used to work at the botanical garden. Also the botanical garden is giving seeds to the seed distribution of the AfM every year.

| If I had learned about this 2 years ago... I spent 2 months working in Leipzig with nothing to do on the weekends, and this is just 50 minutes (by train) away! | |
