How I can recognize a Mammillaria evermanniana by a Mammillaria baxteriana?
Thank's in advance.
Marco

These two sepcies are close, evermanniana really only holding on to species status because it is found only on Isla Cerralvo, whereas the mainland baxteriana has been made a subspecies of petrophila, by Hunt at least.

From observation of my plants, Marco, I would say the differences are mainly in the whiter appearance of M. evermanniana and the two central spines. It usually has more radials than M. baxteriana (15 vs Cool, and 2 centrals vs 1 central. When it is is flower the flowers of evermanniana seem to have a longer stripe and to be a bit paler in colour than those of baxteriana.

So if it looks like baxteriana but is whiter, it could well be evermanniana!.
I hope this helps.

The photo of M. evermanniana? looks like my plants. The others look more like my baxteriana. I'll try to take some photos tomorrow and post then soon.
But I do know that these Baja plants are very variable, so it might not be quite so easy as we'd like.
If you know where those pants come from ,then it would be easy, but if they have no field data, then it is a bit of a lottery.

OK, Marco, here are some of my plants:

M. evermanniana grown from MG seed 640.9
Mammillaria evermanniana e Mammillaria baxteriana Everma10

M. evermanniana grown from DeH seed 528
Mammillaria evermanniana e Mammillaria baxteriana Everma11

M. evermanniana Lau 1272, and interesting a rather woolly form
Mammillaria evermanniana e Mammillaria baxteriana Everma12

And now for a couple of baxterianas:

First a plant named as pacifica, itself a form of baxteriana
Mammillaria evermanniana e Mammillaria baxteriana Baxeri10

and just a baxteriana
Mammillaria evermanniana e Mammillaria baxteriana Baxter10

So there's a sample, of the plants - they are different, mostly evermanniana is whiter as I said before....but how different?

I hope this helps...

I must thank Hugo for the L1272, it is a plant that he gave me in March. But it is doing well.
