Thank you, I didn't even consider that, I thought it was to far north for an Echinocereus. With the clues, I did learn they have been identified in the mountains near Taos in northern NM.
None of the population I stumbled across on my walks are more that 10cm in height and are in a clump about 25 cm wide.
More work required.
