From Mammillaria Society Journal - vol.49 - n.1
The L 677, distributed around Tonala, was named by Lau as M. dixanthocentron fa. But it differs clearly from M. dixanthocentron. The two yellowish central spines have equal length (what you will never find with M. dixanthocentron), the flowers differ in form and the seed has a different testa structure. During the extensive examinations concerning the distribution we found out that the development
of the central spines is strongly dependent on the type of soil. The plants growing on chalky soil produce totally white spines and the central spines are significantly shorter and hard to see. The naming relates to the village San Juan Reyes, north of Tonala, because the name M. tonalensis already exists.
