Subject: ID request - Is this even a Mammillaria? Wed Jul 01, 2015 10:45 pm
Just got given this handsome looking plant (https://i.imgur.com/C1yg0q4.jpg) as a Mammillaria - Quite wooly at the top, and the mammae are upward pointing, while tipped by 2 dark curved central spines. The whole plant is about 5-6 cm tall. For some reason I have doubts that this is even a Mam?

I think you are bang on! Now that I've got Coryphanta in my minds eye, the overall aspect sort of reminds me of C. tripugionacantha, (except that the plant has only 2 strong black spines per tubercle instead of 3), so it's probably not that one....
Do you think that ID could be refined down to species level?

try checking out C. pallida, quite variable, so look at several photos on Google.

I went to the key in Dicht & Lüthy 2005 and did some measuring and counting: confirmed as C. pallida (var. pallida).
Good call, I'm impressed!
Thanks!!!!
