Got this one a few months back without any label from a larger cactus and succulent nursery here downunder. They generally have a few set "staple" species of Mammillarias but walking through this one stood out as being different, bit of a game for me to check through their benches of younger plants and try to pick out the odd ones out. Had orange coloured seedpods at the time of purchase.

Second one came from another nursery, again without label. Could it be M. microthele ssp superfina?

Hi,

The second is definitely Mammillaria microthele, I don;t think the epithet superfina is considered to be valid thes edays.

The first is an interesting plant, and I would say that it is from the Mammillaria dioica group of species. It could be just a straight spined form of M. dioica itself, but those are rather rare. Most likely it is either M. multidigitata or M. neopalmeri, though I favour the former. If it is, then it should start to clump up and form a nice multiheaded plant.

Thanks Chris!
Looks more multidigitata than neopalmeri to my eyes when checking for photos online, though who's to say they are labeled correctly.
Just got to keep my fingers crossed for some offsets to start up soonish.

Hi,

I agree with M.multidigitata - it looks like my one with origin from UHLIG in Germany.
There are some populations of M.dioica with straight spines at Baja California Sur. We find plants east of Villa Insurgentes, near Agua Amarca. But these plants look different to yours.
