Mammillaria nana

M. nana Backeb., Descr. Cact. Nov. 3 : 8. 1963; Kakteenlexikon, 249, t.215, 1966.
(Solitory), globose, about l,5(-4) cm. in height, 2.5(-4) cm. in diameter, underground part napiform; sap watery; tubercles in 5:8 (8:13)
series, cylindric, to 6(-10) mm. long, (3mm. in diameter) shiny dark green; axils sparsely woolly, later even bristly (bristles to 15 mm. long);
areoles oblong, c. 2 mm. long, somewhat tomentose in the middle, with white tomentum. Radial spines (25-) ca. 35, (about 7 mm. long) very thin, (setaceous), white, hyaline, pilose, radiating; central spines at first 0, later to 2, pilose, from the upper part of the areole, 1 strongly ascending straight, fulvous, thin, to 4 mm. long, 1 hooked (acicular) to 7(-9) mm. long, tawny (to dark reddish brown). Flower about l(-2) cm. long, 1(-1.5) cm. in diameter; perianth segments entire, white (or pale creamy yellow r with a tinge of green, the outer with pinkish brown midstripe; filaments style and stigma pale creamy yellow, stigmas 5, 1 mm. long). Fruit and seed not described.
MEXICO: San Luis Potosi, road to Balneario Lourdes. Based on Bu(chenau) 7 in Backeberg's collection, presumably a living plant, as Backeberg is not known to have made herbarium specimens. Because a living specimen cannot serve as. a nomenclatural type (ICBN, 1972 ed., Art. 9) there is some doubt whether M. nana was validly published.
