Society Meeting 2008
(including the 47th Annual General Meeting)
Our 2008 Society meeting will be held at 2:30pm on Sunday 18th May 2008 at the Binley Woods Village Hall. Binley Woods is on the eastern outskirts of Coventry. The programme will consist of a Mammillaria Forum, including three short talks using plants, and a Question and Answer session. The focus will be to encourage audience participation, so please put this date in your diary as it promises to be an interesting and interactive afternoon. At 5pm, the Society will hold its 47th Annual General Meeting, for which, in accordance with Society Rules, nominations are required for the Offices of Chairman, Secretary and Membership Secretary. Written nominations bearing the signatures of proposer and seconder and the consent of the nominee should be sent to the Honorary Secretary not less than sixty days prior to the Annual General Meeting, that is by 19th March 2008. If the number of nominations exceeds the number of vacancies a postal ballot will be held of members.

An update for those who are interested.
The AGM was poorly attended with only 9 members attending and nearly all of those were committee members. It was a shame has the three short talks were very interesting. The first was about the use of limestone chippings and is mention else were on the forum. The second talk was about a flower and fruiting project which is to be under taken by Mike Stansbie. The idea is that a selected group of members who live in different parts of the UK monitor the flowering and fruiting of their plants weekly. The objective is to built up a picture of flowering fruiting times around the UK. It is hoped that the project will rolled out to the whole Society in the new year (2009). The third talk was by Bill Maddams who brought in some of his plants to talk about.
There were also 4 plants of M.orcuttii brought in by the members to compare. None of the plants were documented and my own view was that none of the plants were M.orcuttii has I understood it from the PM 30 collection.
There were also 8 plants labeled M.amajacensis brought in to compare. It was my belief that only 2 of the plants were indeed what the label said and they were both documented (ML 46 and PN 81).
At the AGM itself both the Membership Secretary and the Treasurer indicted that after many years of service they would both be standing down from there positions at the next AGM (2009). The seed distribution is to be brought forward from the Feb Journal to the Nov journal which means that this year there will be 2 seed distributions. The Society has a show on 13th July with Oxford Branch and Wolfgang Plein will be speaking after the show. Talk starts about 4.30 and is tickets only.
