| No.2 Mammillaria albilanata This charismatic species was described by Curt Backeberg in 1939 (Kakteenkunde 47, 1939) and, because of the disrupting effects of World War II, it did not come into general cultivation until more than a decade later. Since then it has been a firm favourite with Mammillaria enthusiasts although, perhaps, it is not as widely grown by other cactus enthusiasts as might have been anticipated., in view of their predilection for plants with white spines and wool. It is normally solitary, globose when young and becoming short cylindrical with age. It is unlikely to to outgrow a five inch container. There are two to four central spines, a mere 3mm. or so in length, white or cream tipped brown and about a dozen and a half finer chalky white radial spines, also about 3mm. in length. Both types of spines are almost totally obscured on the upper part of the plant by copious coarse white wool in the axils, which is so evident in the accompanying illustration. The effect of this is reinforced by white wool in the areoles. This pristine whiteness forms the perfect background for the carmine flowers. These are quite small, as is expected of a member of the Series Elegantes (or Supertextae using the Hunt classification) but, nevertheless, they stand out boldly. This plant needs to be grown in a very bright position in order to induce flowering and, even then, it is unusual to obtain a complete ring of blooms. Nevertheless, it is deserving of a place in every collection because it is attractive at all times of the year. It presents no problems in cultivation and grows readily, albeit a little lowly, from seed. Some gowers aver that it benefits from a little gypsum in the compost, in keeping with many other white spined Mammillaria species. From "The Journal of the Mammillaria Society". Mammillaria albilanata

| Mammillaria albilanata ssp. oaxacana TL 205 TL 205 - M. aff. Juxtlahuaca - San Miguel Tlacotepec Oax. Delandmo in this forum 29.12.2013 about TL 205 .... "Mammillaria juxtlahuacensis is a var. of m. lanigera which has subsequently been lumped into M. albilanata ssp. oaxacana by Hunt. Mark Masterson's plant naming in "Mammillaria Reference Collection" is more up to date, whereas Linzen prefers the older name. They are all the same." TL 205 is in this gallery also like Mammillaria juxtlahuacensis
