| Mammlllaria apozolensis - Apozol, Zacatecas, Mexico, Repp. 978. Repp. 971 from Juchipila, Zacatecas, is also this species. Body: Globose, caespitose, 70-120mm high x 70- 80mm wide. Tubercles: Wide, conic, 8-10mm long x 10-15mm wide, greyish green, with milky sap. Axils: With a little wool. Central spines: 1-2, mainly 2, 10-35mm long, fine acicular, lower longest, straight, smooth, pale brown to reddish. Radial spines: 6-10, 3-12mm long, fine acicular, uppers shortest, smooth, straight, white to brown. Flowers: Bell shaped, 15-20mm long and wide, white with a brownish red stripe. Fruit Clavate, 10-20mm long x 3-5mm wide, red. Seeds: Brown. Reppenhagen compares this species with M. huiguerensis. Uhlig has distributed seed as M. sp. nov. Apozol and M. sp. nov. Juchipila. Plants grown from this seed in 1983/1984 are as follows: Body simple, 50mm high x45mm wide, tubercles 4 sided/conic, 6-10mm high x 7-9mm wide; axils with a little white wool. Central spines 2-4, mainly 2,10-25mm long, straight or slightly tortuous, lower longest, upper sometimes recurved, brown to reddish brown, paler below. Radial spines 9, 3-8mm long, uppers shortest, white to chalky white tipped brown. There is little difference between the plants from the two localities given. From "The Journal of the Mammillaria society" vol.29 n.4 - November 1989 Mammillaria apozolensis From "Giuse" Giuseppe Ruini Collection - Rubiera - R.E.

| Mammillaria apozolensis var. saltensis - type locality Rancho El Salto, Monte Escobedo, Zacatecas, Mexico, Repp. 1510. Also collected by Lau as Lau 1045 from Monte Escobedo. Body: Solitary, globose, to 120mm high and wide, top of plant woolly. Central spines: 2-4, to 45mm long. Radial spines: To 20mm long. Flowers: Pink. The colour of the flowers is an obvious difference and the spines are differently coloured. Both Lau and Reppenhagen believed this variety to be closely related to M. pettersonii, and in the Reppenhagen field number book it is named M. petterssonii? De Herdt has distributed seed of Lau 1045 and Uhlig distributed seed of M. sp. nov. El Salto Repp. 1759. The Repp, number is clearly wrong and it could be that it was meant to be Repp. 1753 which is from El Salto and in the field number book described as M. petterssonii var.? The following is a description of Lau 1045 but the Uhlig sourced material is the same species. Body solitary, 60mm high x 75mm wide; tubercles 4 sided/conic, 8mm high x 12mm wide, green; axils with white wool. Central spines 2, 25-30mm long, straight to recurved to tortuous, yellow below shading to amber above; radial spines 9, 3-12mm long, uppers shortest, Yellow tipped brown. Flowers 17mm wide, pale pink with a deep purplish pink stripe. Fruit 20mm long x 7mm wide, deep red. Seeds brown. An exceedingly attractive variety. Lau 1357 from Metzquitic-Huejuquilla, Jalisco, is a collection of similar ilk. De Herdt speculates in his 1988 catalogue to similar effect. A small plant I have of Lau 1357 has a body that is simple, 45mm high x wide; tubercles 4 sided/conic, 9mm long x 12mm wide, deep green; axils with a little wool and a few short bristles. Central spines 1-2, 30mm long, lower straight, upperrecurving, red brown. Radial spines 7-8, 4-15mm long, uppers shortest, cream to brown, tipped brown. The flowers need to be observed to see whether this plant is closer to the type or the variety. From "The Journal of the Mammillaria society" vol.29 n.4 - November 1989 Mammillaria apozolensis v. saltensis LAU 1045 LAU 1045 - Monte Escobedo, El Salto - Zacatecas - Mexico From "Ento" Ennio Toso collection - Savona
