Hi guys, I bought some new seeds and I want to know if I have to do scarification or other on them before sow. I know that Mammillaria hernandezii is the only in this list who needs scarification, but I don't know very well for others. They are now in a solution of water and GA3
ACHARAGMA roseanum
ARIOCARPUS kotschoubeyanus ssp. sladkovskyi > Rio Verde/SLP/Mexique
ASTROPHYTUM asterias 'Hanazono' x 'Akabana' forme 1 [DR/YC/15]

The huge majority of these seeds don't need any special treatment. For M. hernandezii I got very good germination of seeds from my own plants that had flowered in the spring (I try to delay the flowering from fall to spring, but that does not always work). M. dodsonii might need some kind of scarification, but I don't think that it is really necessary. The only one that does need scarification is M. haudeana, for which I have never gotten good germination. Treatment with concentrated (95%) sulfuric acid (careful, very aggressive) does have a positive effect and a treatment with household bleach also had a positive effect on germination for similar species. I am now trying the method of Franz Dankwart, which I mentioned before, and then with different substrates, because pumice might have a too high basicity.
Wolter.

Thanks Wolter, I sowed some M luethyi from my morherplants too and I tried the gibberellic acid and scarification, they're now in a substrate with lots of organic but not in the surface, only quartz sand because I was scared by the idea of molds

I confirm that M.dodsoni germinates without scarification. In the case of M.haudeana, saaboae, goldii, theresae, the seeds have the ability to germinate for a very long time. Often in the first year after harvesting they do not germinate. At the end of sowing I collect ungerminated seeds from the substrate and sow them again in the following years. Sometimes after two years in which I did not obtain seedlings, in the third year they germinate almost 100%. I obtained the best germination of these species when the seeds came from dead plants - the seeds were many years old. When I made my first sowings (34 years ago) an experienced mammillari breeder suggested that I store the m.theresae seeds in the freezer for two weeks before sowing - I still have the plants from these sowings.

Thanks Marek, I heard about that these Mammillaria species are hard to germinate at the first years, I will try to sow them again if this attempt won't be successful.

I would like to add something about hernandezii seeds, i had a very high germination rate with hernandezii seeds without any special method. I just sowed them and nearly all germinated.
