I can answer that question: they only have central spines when they are young (protection against rodents?). See the two photos of plants in habitat. Photo 1 is at the WTH 322 location (southeast of Viesca), photo 2 is WTH 1143 from the same region, but closer to Ahuichila. Photos 3, 4 and 5 are from old seed-grown WTH 322 in my collection. They had nearly straight central spines as young plants, but did not form m anymore when they grew bigger. Yet, when they form offsets, these offsets initially have the central spines again.
