| Here's the plant, first time in flower, and not one that I have looked carefully at before: It was labelled Mammillaria mystax AvZ225 from Ocotlan de Morelos, Oaxaca. It clearly isn't M. mystax, spines are wrong, my thoughts go to perhaps karwinskiana, but which form? It will be interesting to see if it dichotomises or offsets in time. Whatever it is, it has really pretty flowers, and I haven't seen anything similar in the karwinskiana complex. I'd welcome anyone's comments. _________________ Chris43, moderator

| I can only send you two more mystax of Andre Van Zuijlen... mystax AvZ 466: Axutla (n of Acatlan); Puebla (16-10-10) mystax AvZ 222: San Juan Lachiguiri; Oaxaca | |

| And are you convinced that they are all mystax? I also have AvZ222, which looks like yours, so there is a consistency. But the spines don't look quite right for mystax on these, just stout radials, no centrals. Your first one looks right though to me. _________________ Chris43, moderator

| Andre could have done something wrong with mystax.

| I have contacted André van Zuijlen about this and he responded that he has changed his labels: AvZ222 is now labelled Mammillaria carnea, and AvZ225 is now labelled Mammillaria karwinskiana. He also sent me a habitat photo of each. I would label AvZ222 as M. nejapensis (or karwinskiana if you like). I have labelled the plants which I saw near San José Lachiguiri as M. karwinskiana, just like Michel Lacoste (ML 384), but Thomas Linzen has suggested the name M. confusa for these plants. Whatever, it is something related to karwinskiana. I find the AvZ225 more difficult to identify, but I think that it is also something karwinskiana-like. The plants are very whitish, however (same on the habitat photo of André).

| Correction for one sentence: I have labelled the plants which I saw near San José Lachiguiri as M. nejapensis, just like Michel Lacoste (ML 384, M. confusa; nejapensis in brackets).

| Thanks for the clarification. I agree with karwinskiana for AvZ 225, and will add a fma. on to that name. I think it is a very pretty form, and int'l be interesting to see how it develops. I must look at my AvZ 222 again when I'm back home. _________________ Chris43, moderator
