Mammillaria cobrensis

The pubblication of the species "Mammillaria cobrensis" by Helmut Rogozonski and Wolfgang Plein in 2008, resolved a problem that dated back to 1977 when Alfred Lau found plants at the Barranca del Cobre, bearing his field numbers LAU 1134  and  LAU 1135, to which he attached the name M.lindsayi.
The problem was compounded by Hils in 1994 in a new naming of plants of the type seen by Alfred Lau.
Plants growing in the canyons of Areponapuchi, which have yellow flowers, were given the name M.lindsayi v.cobrensis and plants from near El Divisadero, where he must have seen red flowers, he names M.lindsayi v.rubriflora.
The move away from the use of the name M.lindsayi was made by Linzen and Schumacher in 2007 who sank both names beneath their newly described M.sinforosensis.
In their recent publication H.Rogozinski and W.Plein point out that the plants from Areponapuchi and El Divisadero are much closer to M.craigii than M.sinforosensis and it is on this basis that they gave them separate status as M.cobrensis, without distinguishing between those with red and yellow flowers.
For present purposes ROG 641 comes from El Divisadero and has red flowers while ROG 642 is the form with yellow flowers from Areponapuchi.
