Caespitose, offsetting or rarely dividing dichotomously, stems globose to cylindric, to 13 cm. tall, 9 cm. in diameter; tubercles 5-6 mm. long,
4-6 mm. broad at base, pyramidal, green to dark green, with milky sap;
Axils with 10-25 white bristles 4-8 mm. long.
Central spines 1-5, 4-5 in young plants, later 2-3, finally 1-2, in young plants 4-12 mm. long, acicular, light brown, later mostly 5-10 mm. but to 45 mm. in the same head and cluster, strongly acicular to subulate, at first dark or reddish brown, paler later; radial spines usually 17-20, occasionally to 24, 4-8 mm. long, white, yellow brown and later dark brown at base.
Flowers 17-18 mm. long red, stigmas 5, light green.
Fruit clavate 15-20 mm. long, scarlet red, the dried perianth persistent; seeds pale brown.
MEXICO: Puebla 'south of Chilac', between rocks on a steep hill in open sun or under trees, loamy, stony soil, pH 8.
Type said to have been deposited at MEXU, but not seen by me.
Also reported from near Tilapa (G. & F. 1382), perhaps a disidentification.
