Mammillaria saxicola - type locality Jalpan, Queretaro, Mexico, Repp. 1139.
Body: Caespitose, depressed globose to elongate, 40-100mm high x 50-80mm wide.
Tubercles: Conic, 9-12mm long x 5-7mm wide, olive green with reddish shades, with milky sap.
Axils: With white wool.
Central spines: 1 -2, 7-40mm long, fine acicular, lower longest, straight, yellow to pale brown, tipped darker.
Radial spines: 6-8,2-5mm long, stiff, bristle-like, uppers shortest, yellowish tipped brown.
Flowers: Bell shaped, 20-22mm long and wide, white with a pale pinkish brown mid-stripe.
Fruit: Clavate, 15-20mm long x 5-7mm wide, red.
Seeds: Brown.
Also compared to M. vallensis. Seed has been available from Uhlig as M. sp. n. Jalpan Repp. 1139.
A plant I had from J. Pilbeam in 1984 most likely raised from this seed has the following description:
Body 30mm high x 40mm wide; tubercles 4 sided/conic, 7mm high and wide, green with purple tints; axils slight wool tonaked.
Central spines 1, 7-12mm long, strong, recurving, horn coloured; radial spines 7, 2-5mm long, uppers shortest, horn coloured with brown tip. Flowers bell shaped, 10mm wide, creamy white.
Fruit 15mm long x 3mm wide, deep red.
Seeds brown.
