| Mammillaria schiedeana Ehrenb. in Allg, Gartenz. 6 : 249. 1838, and in Linnaea 19 : 344. 1846 (type locality). Caespitose, semi-globose, individual heads up to 10 cm. tall, 4 cm. in diameter; tubercles cylindric-terete, 6-10 mm. long, 1 mm. thick at apex, 3-4 mm. thick at base, dark green; axils with white woolly hairs longer than the tubercles. Central spines 0, Radial spines very numerous, 2-5 mm. long, in several series, very slender acicular, straight, minutely pubescent, white, yellowish towards the base, golden yellow at the base, the tip usually tapering into a whitish flexuous hair. Flowers small, 8 mm. long, as long as the tubercles, appearing in August to November or perhaps throughout the year, white; fruit elongate, 12 mm. long, 2—3 mm. in diameter, bright carmine-red; seeds black, pitted. MEXICO: Hidalgo, Puente de Dios and the Barrancas around Metztitlan, at 4-5000 feet, in leaf-mould on limestone, 1837, Ehrenberg. Type not known to have been preserved. Said to extend further north down the valley of the Rio Amajac by Sr. Otero (verbal report).
