M. seitziana Martius ex Pfeiffer, Enum. Cact., 18. 1837; Zucc., PI. Nov. Monac., 716. 1837.
Subglobose, at length proliferating from the base; axils woolly; tubercles green, conic, scarcely angled, tetragonous at the base; young
areoles white-villose, at length more or less naked; spines 4, straight, rigid, decussate, the upper and lower equal and longer, flesh-pink with
black tip, and with 2 much smaller laterals close to the uppermost, fleshpink.
Stem 12.5 cm. tall, 9 cm. in diameter, tubercles 10 mm. long, 7 mm. in diameter at base. Largest spines 12 mm. long, intermediate 8 mm., smallest 3-4 mm. (one sometimes lacking).
Flowers in spring, pale rose-pink, almost 25 mm. long, little expanded, 12 mm, in diameter. Sepals olivaceous, petals linear-lanceolate, whitish with red mid-vein. Stamens whitish, anthers yellow, style 6-parted.
The above is a translation of the particulars from Pfeiffer's original Latin description. Zuccarini also attributed the name to Martius, who does
not appear to have published it himself, and his (Zuccarini's) description agrees very closely, although the colour of the plant is described as glaucous. Both Zuccarini and Pfeiffer report the type locality as Ixmiquilpan (Hidalgo) and Zuccarini says that 'it grows near Ixmiquilpan and Zimapan, whence live specimens were sent by Karwinzki'. Unfortunately, Karwinski's collections from Hidalgo and elsewhere seem to have been hopelessly mixed up by the time they got to Europe, if not before, and one cannot take the Ixmiquilpan report as 'gospel'. It comes as no surprise that Ehrenberg (in Linnaea 19 : 349. 1846) denied it, and averred that M. seitziana was from Oaxaca.
Mammillaria seitziana
The application of this name is uncertain, but is more correctly applied to a species from Oaxaca, not, as Reppenhagen has done, for a variation of M. magnimamma from Hidalgo, from where it was originally reported; this was corrected to Oaxaca.
It is usually attached to species with affinities to either M. compressa or M. magnimamma, both of which precede it.
