Caespitose, individual stems to 40 cm. tall, (5-)7-9 cm. in diameter, with milky sap; tubercles rounded-pyramidal or conic (3-)6-7 mm. long, 7-9 mm. across at base, with watery sap. Axils with white wool and 8-15 bristles (1-5 in var. minor). Central spines 4-5 (-
, strong acicular, clear yellowish brown, variable, the lowermost (15-)35-55 mm. long, hooked, the remainder shorter, straight; radial spines (17-) 18-24, 3-8 mm. long, glassy white or yellowish. Flowers (17-) 20 mm. long, 11-12 mm. in diameter, purplish red; fruit clavate (9-) 15-22 mm. long, rose below, speckled above and green at tip, the withered perianth persistent; seeds brown, pitted.
MEXICO : Puebla, San Juan Bautista, on the slopes of a cerro on rocks, in full sun or under shrubs, 1500 m. alt., soil pH 4-5, collected in 1965, F.G.Buchenau (var. magnifica); Puebla, Cerro de la Cruz, on cliff-tops in full sun or half-shade under trees, 1500 m. alt., soil pH 5-6, collected in 1965, F.G. Buchenau (var. minor).
