Simple or cespitose from the base
Tubercles widely separated, ovateoblong (3-5cm. long, with watery sap);
Axils woolly.
Spines 9-10 (up to) 12-18(-20)mm. long (central usually 1, rarely to 3, up to 25mm. long; radials 9-10), minutely scabrous-pubescent. Flowers 4-6cm. long, citron yellow; fruit yellowish;
Seeds brown, pitted
MEXICO: Based on a living plant, Coulter no. 30, not known to have been preserved. Presumably this came from Hidalgo or thereabouts but
the type locality is not recorded. In the same collection De Candolle received M.elongata, M.echinaria etc. from Coulter and these are also
native to Hidalgo.
