Mammillaria humboldtii Ehrenb. in Linnaea 14 :378. 1840.
Solitary or several headed, depressed globose or globose tubercles 4-12 mm. l.ong, 2-3 mm. thick (with watery sap); axils with wool and white bristles, longer or shorter than the tubercles.
Spines all radial, 80 or more, 4-6 mm. long, unequal, snow-white, smooth, delicate, straight.
Flowers longer than the tubercles, bright red; stigmas 3 green.
Fruit clavate red, dried perianth not persisting; seeds black.
MEXICO: Hidalgo, limestone hills between Ixmiquilpan and Metztitlan,
January 1840. Type not stated to have been preserved.
