| From "The Journal of the Mammillaria society" - vol.9 - n.2 - pag.24 M. erythrocalix F. G . Buchenau in Cact. Sue. Mex. 11 : 17-21 with fig., 42, descr. lat. 1966. Stems caespitose, cylindric, with milky sap; tubercles with watery sap; axils with 1-5 bristles. Central spines 4-6, rarely 7, 5-8 mm. long, the lowest hooked, strongly acicular, reddish tipped, paler below, becoming greyish; radial spines 16-20, 3-6 mm. long, finely acicular, greyish. Flowers 18-20 mm. long, 12-13 mm. in diameter; outer perianth segments brownish purple, ciliate, inner longer, blood red. Fruit elongate, clavate, 18 mm. long, 3-4 mm. thick; seeds brown, finely pitted. Mexico: Puebla, south of Chiautla, 4250 feet (1300 m.), on rock, under trees and bushes in black soil with pH 6. Holotype at MEXU. A member of the M. spinosissima group very closely allied to M. duoformis, from which it differs slightly, and perhaps not significantly, in floral characters.
