Stem simple, or branching from the base, cylindric; sap watery in tubercles, or 'semi-milky' in stem; axils with bristles.
Central spines 4, 10-12mm. long, pinkish tan below, blackish above, the upper three straight, the lower longer, darker, stout acicular,
hooked (var. duoformis)or straight (var. rectiformis Craig ex Dawson, Lc. p. 60); radial spines 18-20, 5-7mm. long, slender acicular,
straight, orange-tan at very base, chalky white to pale yellow above.
Flowers . 15mm. long, 12mm. in diam. crimson.
Fruit brownish pink, 18mm. long, 4mm. in .diam.., perianth persisting; seeds brown, (irregularly) pitted.
