This Dolichothele longithele is grown from seed with that name from Koehres. It is in flower at this moment. Does anyone else grow this one? I think it is 'just' M. decipiens ssp. albescens. Do you agree on that?

Wiebe

Hi Wiebe,
This is a plant from Kohres seeds, as dolichothele longithele.
Probably decipiens ssp albescens

I am not sure that this is decipiens albescens. It looks very much like my plants of decipiens camptotricha TL 403.

In my opinion these plants do not have the twisted spines of the ssp. camptotricha but the straight spines of the ssp albescens. Mark, it would be nice to see a picture of your TL 403.

Hi Wiebe,

Sorry to take so long, the picture below is my plant of ssp camptotricha TL 403, grown from seed from Aymeric de Barmon.

longithele - Dolichothele longithele Tl_40310

Has you can see the spination is very similar to that of your plant. I would suggest that our plants are on the young side and have yet to produce the long twisted spines that we know.

Just for interest the plant below is ssp albescens WTH 467.

longithele - Dolichothele longithele Wth_4611

Has you can see the spination is slightly different. They are straighter and more whiter.

Hope this helps, Mark M.

straighter and more whiter like this?
the plant coming from a little greenhouse was labelled mammillaria decipiens ssp albescens.
i was dubious for the hight number of radial spines...
may i have your suggestion?

Not a decipiens, more of a gracilis type of plant.

The last photos in the message of Maurillio strongly remind me of a similar clumping plant in my collection, which I received from someone more than 20 years ago. It was labelled M. albescens, but because of the fairly large number of radial spines, I think that it is better to qualify it as M. decipiens without central spines.

As far as the long-tubercled plant of Wiebe is concerned, I would just keep it labelled as M. longithele. But I think that it is more related to M. camptotricha than to M. albescens.
Nature does not draw such strict lines as we do, plants of the same species can differ considerably from one to the other location. Therefore, it is sometimes difficult to attach a name to a plant found in nature, because it has features of more than one species.

Attached is a scanned slide of my WTH 467 (part of a multi-headed plant), which I have qualified as M. albescens.

Hy to evryone!

Very nice your plants! cheers

But i think Dolichothele longithele and Mammillaria longithele NOT EXIST!

Just: Mammillaria longimamma or Dolichothele longimamma

Have a nice day!

I'd agree that longithele is not a validly published name. I have seen reference to the name as Dolicothele (Mammillaria) camptotricha var longithele nom. nudum, and it is available ass seed from Kpehres and a couple of other seed sellers.
I can't find any reference to it being a published name, so whether you keep the name on your label or not is your personal decision.
From my own perspective, it is an interesting variant, but just that.
