Hello everyone,

I bought this plant as Mam. spec. from San Juan Tonaltepec. This location is between Tomellin and Telixtlahuaca at the MEX-135. I am not sure with conspicua because the small and light pink flowers looking quite different to my other conspicuas and it is flowering now. Is var. vaupelli a option? Radial spine: 19-21; Central spine: 2

That's a very interesting plant and it comes from an area in which the taxonomy of the Mammillarias that live there is quite complicated.

I actually think that what you have falls into the category of Mammillaria dixanthocentron. The flowers look right to me for this species, the geography of where it comes from is right, and this species is quite variable in its spines, so the yellow short spines aren't a show stopper.

M. flavicentra has, by some botanists, been subsumed under this species, but I think of this as a more northerly form of M. dixanthocentron at best, as it comes from the area on the border of Puebla and Oaxaca. It also has 4 distinct central spines, not the two of your plant, although counting spines isn't a totally reliable means of identification as natural variation sometimes gets in the way!

Thank you for your detailed response, I agree with the flowers so now I have a short spined M. dixanthocentron Very Happy Yes counting spines isnt very reliable.. I wish REM-photography would be a payable thing for our hobby.
