PostSubject: Suggestions need re identification   Suggestions need re identification Icon_minitimeSun Oct 04, 2015 1:55 am

Hi I am from Sydney Australia and this is my first post. I have two mamms bought from a nursery and I could do with some help in verifying their identity.
The first is labelled M.candida and appears to be correctly labelled except that the flowers have two rings of petals. All the pictures I have seen show only one ring. Is my plant unusual or is it something other than M.candida?
The other which was bought this week is labelled as M.bocasana. It is in a 10cm pot, is bright green not very hairy and has about 8 offsets. The flowers are yellow. The offsets are also flowering. I cannot find any reference to M.bocasana having yellow flowers. The nursery also had M.bocasana with normal coloured flowers.
I realise that they both may be hybrids but does any one have any comments?

Hi Bondy,
I suspect that your plant is just a little unusual. I have seen flowers of a species vary a fair bit. Maybe a picture would help here, if you can work you way through the posting process (details of how to do so are in the "Guidance, How to" section).
M. bocasana flowers are normally yellow-cream with the outer sepals reddish. There are pink forms of this as well in cultivation. The degree of variability of hairiness also varies enormously, but I wonder if your plant might be M. bocasana ssp. eschauzieri?

Thanks Chris43 for your suggestions. I am going to do some more research as it may not be a bocasana after all. The flowers are lemon yellow with no stripes which seems to be at odds with normal bocasanas. I will keep you advised if I find any more info. I intend posting a photo if I can get a decent one.

Regards
bondy

Hi bondy,
Seems possible that your plant being rather green and with yellow flowers and not much wool is a type of Dolichothele. Maybe d.baumii or similar.

Hi delandmo. Thanks for your suggestion. I have just re-examined the plant and here is a brief description. It is 7cm wide and about 5 cm tall. It has 7 offsets each 2cm in diameter. Radials 20+, 3 centrals 1 hooked dark brown. Flowers are yellow with a very very light green stripe on some flowers.
Looking through Pilbeam's book I have come to the conclusion that Chris43 is probably close to the money with his suggestion that it is M.bocasana ssp eschauzieri. I understand that even with pure seed there can be variations so perhaps this plant was correctly labelled. Thanks again to you and Chris43 for your assistance.
