Dear friends.
I have a short question.
What is a good and affordable label printer?
Labels must also remain readable in the Sun.
Many have professional labels at their plants, I would like also like to.
Have an nice day,
Joseph

Hi Joseph,

I'm not sure if you are looking for a hand held printer or a computer driven one, but this is what I use, and have used for some 4 years now, and the labels are still fine, legible, not faded and not discoloured.

I use a Brother PT-2430PC, which is an old model now, but they are still available, as is the simpler PT-1230PC They print onto plastic label strip (TZ type), which I have found to be near indestructible, and it will cut each label as you print. You then have to peel off the backing tape and stick this onto a more rigid plastic label. The current model seems to be the PT-P750W which although listed at £168 on the Brother website, you can buy for around £60, and it uses TZe tapes, which I gather are very similar to TZ, but not sure if they are interchangeable.

This printer does has to be driven by a PC, which I do from an Excel file. You design your own layout, and link each field to the field in the Excel file you want. This is done through a free Brother program. You then see the file and the label in windows in the program, and select which rows you want to print. It can be a bit tricky to get it all right, but trial and error worked Ok for me.

Its a bit out of focus, but in the photo below, you can see the layout that this can produce. I print my collection number across the top, and then three lines, the first being the genus and species, the second the subspecies/variety if any) and the field number, and on the last line the location information. If the plant has no field number, then I used a slightly different two line format.

Oh, and if you do go this way, look on the internet (**Bay etc) for compatible tapes, as Brother's own are very expensive.

Just like Chris, I have the Brother P-touch 2430PC. Works very well, but as Chris said, the Brother tapes are rather expensive. A few years ago, Henk Ruinaard wrote an article about label printers in the Dutch journal Succulenta.
