what is LAU 017 ? 3343-210

Cactus and Succulent Field Number Query - Ralph Martin....

Field number: LAU 17
Collector: Alfred Bernhard Lau
Species: Mammillaria angelensis fma.
Locality: Isla Esteban, Baja California, Mexico
Altitude: 1-200m
Date: 18/11/1972
Notes: together with Echinocereus grandis and Pachycereus pringlei; = Mammillaria estebanensis

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mammillaria - John Pilbeam
LAU 017 - estebanensis - Baja, isla san esteban

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the post "Lau fields number" here, Walter Hellinx write....
017 angelensis

Tam...
In the lau field list 017 is estebanensis, 018 is angelensis

Walter Hellinx....
About the Lau 017, that is a mistake in Pilbeams book, it is not comming from Isla Esteban, but from Isla San Lorenzo, and has nothing to do with var.estabenensis.

How can i call my LAU 17 ?

*
Mammillaria Estebanensis is from Isla San Esteban, but also from Isla San Lorenzo...

Hi Maurillio, Maybe worth contacting either J. Pilbeam or D. Hunt, both still around. either by e-mail or write. Both were close to Lau. In fact our Chris Davies may even solve this issue. For now Lau 17.

Below is the English text in the field number list of Alfred B. Lau, issued by the German Mammillaria Society in 1992:

Isla San Esteban,
rocky hills and gravel dry creek beds; volcanic, mineral soil; uninhabited.
0017 M. angelensis (form)
This is the form known as M. estebanensis that is almost never seen in collections. It is dominant on the islands San Esteban and San Lorenzo. Dr. Hunt did not accept it as an own species and arranged it to M. angelensis, to what it is undoubtedly related. M. angelensis has white flowers with seldom a touch of light-crimson, whereas the colour of the petals of this taxon tends to a light-green colour.

Isla Angel de la Guardia,
large sandy planes at the beach, dry canyons, volcanic mountains; mineral soil, uninhabted Island.
0018 M. angelensis

Hope this helps!

Wolter ten Hoeve.
