Does anyone have a picture of SB 717 that they can post. It is suposed to be M.bocensis ( neoschwarzeana ) from Magdalena, Jal, but I have been told that it is in fact M.scrippsiana. I have some small seedlings of this collection grown from Brack seed and it is to early to say what they are so any help in clearing up the matter would be welcome.

Haha...I like that one, Walter!
I've taken a quick look at my recent (last 5 years) SB lists, and I can't find a catalogue which has got this SB number in. It is in Pilbeam, but that was printed 11 years ago, so I wonder if the error goes back to those days or before. I'll take a look tomorrow at some older catalogues from the 90's, but whatever it says, Walter is quite right, bocensis (or neoschwarziana as it is also listed in Pilbeam) is a low altitude plant and usually found in the coastal regions and rivers that feed into the ocean, while Magdalena is at 1300-1400 m.

The seed came from the Piltz 2008 seed list. Seed sown 15-6-08 and germinated 25-6-08. I have 4 seedlings this being one of them.

The picture above seems to be a match for M.scrippsiana with 8-10 pale radials, dark tipped and 2 longer, red - brown centrals.
It would be interesting to see a mature plant.

I agree, that looks much more like scrippsiana even at this young stage.
I checked my old Mesa Garden seed lists, and appears as neoschwarziana in the 1993 list. All I can think is that Steven Brack made a mistake in identification.

I think that is more like scrippsiana than bocensis. Some forms can be really quite woolly.

SB 826 is mammillaria neoschwarzeana...

Yes, M neoschwarziana is the pale coloured form of bocensis, now acc. Hunt, synonomous with it.

Nice woolly plant indeed, looking fairly similar to those posted by Maurillio.
