Mammillaria hernandezii - some died, some survived - why?

This winter, I moved my 5 M. hernandezii plants into a warmer area. They had all had similar cultivation during the last growing year, and I gave them all a little water in January, in case they had shrivelled too much.
Now it is time ot move them out and water again, and I have found that two of my plants have died - both the grafted plants. The plants on their own roots are fine, have plumped up nicely and look good.
I used to believe that plants on a graft were likely to do better over winter because they had more to call upon should they need to from the stock. But maybe not!
I grow very few plants on a graft, so haven't a lot of experience with them. Can anyone offer me any advice, explanation or comments?

I don't like grafted plants...they don't look nice!!!

I have just 4 grafted plants who have problems in the past and i had to do it, but this spring they will be degrafted.

I grow my plants on mineral compost, they look nice(very natural), good drainige and more rezistent.

My question is:

The grafting stock died or just the Mams???

hernandezii is a problem plant with me. I have brought, grown and killed a number of them in the last few years. They just seem to dry up whether they are on a stock or on their own roots. And it is the same with the flowers, they always appear and then dry up has well.
I have seen large multi-headed plants and often wonder how they do it. For myself I do not intend to by anymore plants but wait until I see some documneted seed for sale.

in italy you can find chestnut to 800 mt above sea level.
if you plant a chestnut tree in the plains, born but does not develop and die after a few mounths.
such as beech.
cannot be something related to altitude?
i know that there are a lot of mammillarias from hight altitude that grows well at sea level, but this could be different than the others.

It seems to rain also in the October month (but it is also still pretty warm). So that is a little bit longer than we are used in our greenhouses i guess. This extra month of rain just before the temperature goes down maybe what the need to surive the dry winter period.

I did grafting on Opuntia fragilis and they are doing quit well. The seem to bloom later than the year (april) than the ungrafted. Opuntia fragilis has no problems with some water in the winter.

I don't know what kind of grafting stock was used in the original post?

That's interesting. It sounds like I must put my warm space into operation earlier than I did last year and also wate rthem later too.

I'm not sure what the grafting stock was, it looked like a 10cm lengh of some sort of Cereus, about 5cm in diameter. It looked OK, just the grafts that had died, and they weren;t small ones either.

These weather information is from the city i guess. I dont know whether this applies to the geographic distribution of M. hernandezii.
Is there more information on the location of this plant?

In another topic on the forum Wiebe is showing his plants (they look good) and is is explaining that his greenhouse is on a higher temprature (14 degrees).
