Anales del instituto de biologia Mexico 25: 540 - 541. 1954

Body: Globose to short cylindrical, 9 - 25 cm high and 7 - 15 cm in diameter, sometimes dividing dichotomously, sunken apically, olive green body.
Roots: Fibrous.
Sap: With latex.
Tubercule: Firm, four - angled pyramidal, 8 - 10 mm long and 14 mm wide at base. Young tubercles are more elliptical in youth.
Axil: With white wool and a few bristles, later naked.
Radial spine: 5 - 10, the 5 uppermost 1 - 5 mm long, the others to 10 mm long, awl - shaped, white with brown tips.
Central spine: 3 - 4 , sometimes 5, the 3 uppermost are 4 - 10 mm long, awl shaped, straight, reddish gray with dark tip, the lowest is very long, to 60 mm, thicker than the others, sometimes curved.
Flower: Purplish red, funnelform, not opening widely, 12 mm long and 15 mm in diameter.
Fruit: Club-shaped, red, 25 mm long.
Seed: Bell-shaped, brown, 1,1 mm long and 0,7 mm wide.
Habitat Substrate: Volcanic rocks.
Geographic Distribution: Mexico, Oaxaca, near Tlaxiaco and Suchixtlahuaca. Bibliography: AfM - LBS Lieferung 09/95 Linzen.
